Thank you for volunteering to participate in the 40 Days for Life Honolulu prayer vigil! The vigil is not an opportunity for confrontation, debate, or angry protest. It is a time of silent, intercessory prayer that serves as a peaceful witness of God’s love for all people during all stages of life, even before birth. Our presence at the prayer vigil is a sign to the community that we: affirm the sanctity of life; deplore the evil of abortion and its devastating aftermath; offer loving abortion alternatives; and support women during their time of need. It is important to emphasize that while we hate the sin of abortion, we love the sinner, and we point people to the healing and forgiveness available to all through Christ.
All prayer vigil volunteers must agree to the 40 Days for Life Honolulu "statement of peace" before participating. The statement of peace is found on this web site by clicking on the "vigil schedule" menu, then selecting the "statement of peace" link on the right-hand side of the page. Additionally, we bring the following items to the attention of all prayer vigil participants:
- We are conducting this campaign in accordance with all federal, state, and local laws. If any law enforcement or city/county official asks you to do something you don’t understand or agree with, comply with the request, but get the person’s name and badge number, if possible. Report the incident with all pertinent details to campaign director Isaiah at 383-5137 or call us at 722-5338.
-
You are requested not to speak with local media. Instead, direct all questions to communications coordinator Karen at 722-5338 or campaign director Isaiah at 383-5137, or refer media people to our web site, www.40DaysForLife.com/Honolulu.
-
Maintain an attitude of silent prayer during the vigil. Refrain from talking, eating, or any other activities that would distract you or others from prayer. Sound amplification devices are prohibited by city ordinance. Shouting; loud singing; using air horns or other noise-making devices; waving or other attention-seeking behavior; distributing materials; political signs; confronting or stalking those you may encounter, etc. is not in keeping with the spirit of this event. If you need to speak with someone after you have concluded your prayer time, step away from the immediate area of the vigil site so as not to distract others who are praying.
-
Do not respond to those who oppose you. Your conversation is with God. If anyone affiliated with Planned Parenthood or the building management company confronts you or asks you to leave, simply shake your head and return to praying. (It’s impossible to argue with someone who won’t say anything in return!) Silent prayer on a public sidewalk is a constitutional right so long as you aren’t blocking doorways, driveways, or the right-of-way for sidewalk passersby. The Honolulu Police Department is aware of our campaign and supports our right to free speech in the form of silent prayer and holding signs.
-
Be prepared! It’s akamai to have an umbrella handy, use sunscreen, wear comfortable shoes, bring water, etc. If you signed up for a lengthy block of prayer time, know your limits, and take breaks when you need them. Arrive several minutes before your scheduled prayer time to allow time to find parking and walk to the vigil site. Garage parking at the clinic location is reserved for clients; look for street parking along side streets such as Young or Sheridan Sts.
- If you have any questions or concerns, email FortyDaysHonolulu@Juno.com or call 722-5338. Thank you for your vigil participation, and may God bless you!
