February 2012

Dear Concerned Napa Community Residents,

Some people ask why a 40 Days for Life prayer vigil is planned for Planned Parenthood at 1735 Jefferson Street, here in Napa, CA.
Some think this facility doesn’t do abortions.

It’s a good question; the short answer is that although surgical abortions may not be performed there, abortion-minded women are referred to other facilities that do offer surgical abortions. Their web site also advertizes “Birth Control Services” and “Emergency Contraception”.

What does that mean? It translates to offering chemical concoctions and mechanical devices that abort 7 to 11 times as many children as do surgical abortions. “Emergency Contraception” refers to the ‘morning after pill’, Ella, methotrexate/Misoprostol. This and the birth-control pills, shots, etc. all transform the womb from the warmest, softest, safest, most perfect human environment to a barren, hostile wasteland; here the little human simply cannot find nourishment; he/she starves somewhere around the end of the first week of his life.

Abortion is never in the best interest of the mother – and certainly not of the child. So the presence of people praying from February 22 to April 1 for an end to abortion is perfectly appropriate at this location. Any abortion has a profound negative impact on people who live in Napa – and on the future of our community.

40 Days for Life asks all people of good will to pray and fast for an end to abortion. We see abortion as a spiritual challenge; we don’t expect a political solution any time soon. Some may think our vigil is a protest or demonstration, but that is not the case. 40 Days for Life is a peaceful, prayerful outreach. Just as Jesus, only days old in Mary’s womb, caused John to “leap” for joy in the womb of Elizabeth when Mary carried Him there to visit, our presence may be the very last contact our least brother or sister has with Jesus on earth.

We are confident that our seven 40 Days for Life campaigns have increased awareness and led to a significant decline in the number of women seeking abortions. We pray that this fall campaign will continue that wonderful work.

The vigil is only one part of this effort.
