VIGIL GUIDELINES

Please take note of the following guidelines when participating in the 40 Days for Life prayer vigil outside of the Abortion Mill.  All registrants are expected to respect these guidelines as a condition to their participation.

Statement of Peace - If you do not agree with this Statement, you are not welcome to participate.

Greetings - When you arrive at "Ground Zero" (the place of Vigil outside of the Abortion Mill), please greet your co-vigilers and introduce yourself, but please do not engage in prolonged chit chat. We are there to pray and sacrifice, not to engage in idle talk.  The Vigil Campaign is meant to be a time of intense prayer and solemnity.

Prayer Zone -  Vigilers are asked to stand on the West side of Bank Street, across the street from Morgentaler's abortion mill.  The place to stand is on the sidewalk between the concrete planters and the road.  Avoid sitting on the concrete planters or encroaching on private property.   Only designated sidewalk counsellors are permitted to witness on the East side of the street where the Abortion mill is located.  When the sidewalk counsellors engage pregnant women or their entourage, please do not stare or gawk. Instead, keep your head down and pray hard.

How shall we pray at the vigil site? -  Our prayer in front of the abortion mill is a silent, peaceful and prayerful public witness. We ask for God's mercy on the abortionist and the staff doing the killing. We pray for the passers-by, that they will take notice of this abomination and be moved to action in ending the killing in their neighbourhood. We plead for the lives of the babies in theirs mothers' wombs and we reach out to these women with the love of Christ. "Prayer is essential because before a mother is able to physically abort her child, a "spiritual abortion" must take place within her heart. This "spiritual abortion" must be overcome by spiritual means. God is calling the mother to heroic virtue as in many casees her situation is so difficult(...) We are there with loving prayers for the unborn children who are doomed to die. The only human love they may ever encounter in their short lives may be from those of us standing outside. We embrace them spiritually. We stand with them when they die." - Msgr. Philip Reilly – Helpers of God's Precious Infants

Engagement - If a member of the public wants to engage you on the issue of abortion, move away from the "prayer zone" so as to not disturb the other vigilers.  You are not required to engage anyone, but if you do so, please show some decorum and common sense. Do not raise your voice or become animated. Simply state your views calmly, rationally, and with Christian charity.  The 40 Days for Life Campaign does not support abortion under any circumstances, rape and incest included.

Pray Quietly - The 40 Days for Life Vigil Campaign is meant to be a silent prayer time. However, if you want to pray audibly, please move some distance away to respect those who wish to pray in silence.

Depository - There will be a plastic storage bin with the official 40 Days for Life Prayer Booklet, a registration binder, pro-life resources, and other material. There will also be an empty crade on the site to witness to the babies that never slept in them.  Please keep this cradle empty to honour their memories.

Campaign Vigil Relief Phone Number -  Vigilers are encouraged to bring their cellular phones with them to report emergencies. If you do not have one, there is a Bell payphone nearby. Please be sure to have 50 cents available to make a phone call, if necessary. In the event that the next vigiler has not arrived by the time your shift has ended, you are asked to phone one of the two following numbers:

From 9AM-5PM
613.729.0379

From 5PM-9AM

Please do not call until 5 minutes before your shift has ended.  Call back if, in the intervening time, the original vigiler has subsequently arrived.
