A unique approach to ending abortion 40 Days for Life is an intensive effort designed to raise awareness, save lives, bring healing, and lead our nation to repentance for the sin of abortion through three components: ANSWERING THE CALL FOR A GREAT PRAYER FOR LIFE: 1. Pray and fast Christ told us that some demons can only be driven out by prayer and fasting. The two go hand in hand. Prayer keeps us rooted in the fact that it is our desire to carry out God's will. Fasting is a sacrifice that helps us reach beyond our own limitations with God's help. Fasting is not a Christian diet; it is a form of physical prayer. You can fast from food, TV, alcohol ... anything that separates you from God. 2. Spread the word The success of 40 Days for Life depends on the most powerful form of advertising in the world -- word of mouth. In late 2004 in College Station Texas, Shawn Carney and David Bereit gathered with a few others to pray for God's guidance on what action to take to end abortion. From that prayer, the 40 days for life prayer campaign was born.
This campaign seems in many ways to answer the late Pope John Paul II's call for prayer in the Gospel of Life, when he said,
"...A GREAT PRAYER FOR LIFE is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up
throughout the world. Through special initiatives and in daily prayer, may an
impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life, FROM EVERY CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY, from every group and association, from every family AND FROM THE HEART OF EVERY BELIEVER.
The 40 days for life brings together Christians from all communities to raise up just such a prayer. The campaign calls for a grassroots effort to rise up and take part in these peaceful, prayerful actions to end abortion in our time:
