Memorial Mass for Babies who died of influenza 1918
St. James, Cemetery, Woodbridge
Fr. Charles Cicerale, main celebrant
Procession after Mass to grave site with KxC & bagpipes
During the terrible flu pandemic of 1918, Woodbridge proper was hit very hard. The hardest hit was the most innocent of all...our babies! Many babies did not survive long enough to even be baptized. Some lived a few days and others succumbed soon after. Many unbaptized are in the ground at St James Cemetery with no markers or acknowledgment.
On Saturday November 7th at 9:30 am in St James Mausoleum, Mass will be celebrated for our Innocent babies of St James. After the Mass we will follow a bagpiper, the Cross, altar servers, our priests and deacons and the State of NJ Knights of Columbus Color Corp to the site where Shevchenko Monument has donated a beautiful monument to our babies. We would like to welcome all to be with us as Fr. Charlie blesses the monument and consecrates the ground of all our Holy Innocents of St. James. Following the service The Hampton Inn (a few steps from the grave-site) invited all to be their guests for coffee and...in their lobby.
Please arrive early (9 am) Parking will be in Gill and Chamas parking lot. You may also park in The Hampton Inn lot. We will shuttle you back to Gill and Chamas if need be. We are trying to accommodate all so that no one misses this historic event in our church.
Directions to parking at Gill and Chamas:
From St James Church: Make right onto Amboy Ave. Go 1 mile to light at FLORIDA GROVE ROAD. Make right. Go .6 mile to Gill and Chamas on right. Pull into parking lot. Mausoleum is a few steps from lot. We will have a sign with a balloon tied so no one misses the turn.
God bless you all and hope to see you Saturday. Mitzi (St James Church)
